Affogato al caffè is a classic Italian dessert where hot espresso is poured over vanilla ice cream. If desired, you can refine it with a splash of Amaretto (almond liqueur).

The word Affogato means "drowned." Affogato al caffè translates to "drowned in coffee" – and that's exactly what happens to the vanilla ice cream when it's covered in hot espresso. 🍨☕

Ingredients

  • 2 scoops of vanilla gelato (or high-quality vanilla ice cream)
  • 1 shot (about 30 ml) of hot espresso
  • 15 ml (1 tbsp) of Amaretto liqueur
  • Optional: Shaved dark chocolate
  • Optional: Crushed Amaretti biscuits

Instructions

  1. Place two scoops of vanilla gelato in a serving glass or bowl.
  2. Brew a fresh, hot shot of espresso and pour it directly over the gelato.
  3. Drizzle the Amaretto on top to enhance the almond flavor.
  4. Optional: Garnish with shaved dark chocolate or crushed Amaretti biscuits.
  5. Serve immediately and enjoy!
